Learning the Rules of Omaha Poker
The game of poker is thought to date back to the early part of the 19th century. It is said that the game of poker first appeared in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The saloons and floating gaming palaces upon the banks of the mighty Mississippi River are said to be the birthplace of this popular card game.
It is often said that poker came to fame on the notorious Mississippi riverboats. It is thought that the first games of poker had a deck that had 20 cards and only contained tens, jacks, queens, kings and aces. In those days it was typical for a player to bet on what hand was most valuable. The name poker is said to be coined by Joseph Cromwell in 1829, but it wasn’t until 1843 that Jonathan Green wrote a book called “An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling,” that the game was called poker in print.
There are many versions of the game of poker with Texas Hold’em reigning as king, but Omaha Poker is a popular version played in both tournaments and casinos alike. It is said that next to Texas Hold’em, Omaha Poker comes in a close second. One of the most fascinating aspects of this game is that it comes from such humbles beginnings, along the banks of the Mississippi, and has found international fame in casinos around the world.
What are the Rules
If you are not familiar with the game of Texas Hold’em, you might find the rules a bit confusing at the start for Omaha poker. The best way to learn the game is to watch it being played. You can easily do this by finding an Omaha poker tournament on the television, go to a casino and watch others play, or you can read up on the finer points of the game online or in one of the many publications that are dedicated to the art of poker playing.
There are two versions of Omaha poker. The first that is typically played is only high hands. The other version called Omaha Hi-Lo or the high-low split is also popular as well. In the United States the Omaha Hi-Lo is the dominant version, but here in Europe the limit high-only is the more popular of the two.
Omaha poker rules are much the same as the rules for Texas Hold’em with a few differences. In Omaha poker, the players are dealt four cards called the pocket cards instead of two. These are the cards no one else can see. A player has to use two of the pocket cards of his hand, along with three of the community cards in order to make the best hand of poker. In the game of Omaha poker, there are only a maximum of ten players.
All of the players are given four cards deatlt face down and these are considered the pocket cards. Now the first round of betting can begin. The rounds are played the same as in the game of Texas Hold’em. The first two cards that are dealt to all the players are called the preflop. The flop is when the dealer puts out the first three of the community cards that are placed in the middle of the table. The turn is when there is a fourth card dealt face up as one of the community cards. The river is when the final card, the 5th is dealt to the community cards in the center of the table, face up.
The player that is holding the best hand of 5 cards, using three from the community cards and two from their hand is considered the winner and takes the money in the pot.
The finer points of the game can only be learned by playing and observing. No poker game is difficult to learn, it is only in the confusion of the different versions that some people become lost.
