Poker Tips for Beginners - Poker UK.

This page contains some poker tips to help you with poker. For a beginner these tips will positively improve your game. Some will be obvious but a lot of good players improved their games by using these kinds of tips and the amount of money they win goes up, all by simply following at least one of the poker tips on this page.

Do not play poker when under the influence of alcohol!

When you are teaching yourself poker you need to concentrate on what is going on around you. From experience, I know, even a couple of glasses of wine will increase your chances of leaving a table with no money. You will be more likely to try a bluff or take a chance after a bottle of wine! Not that deceiving is always a bad thing, it's just that you need to choose the moment carefully.

Try to only play good poker hands.

This is obvious however you will be amazed. Winning at poker is about getting a statistical edge over your opponents in the long term. Starting with a strong hand increases your chances and you would be ahead of your opponents before you start betting.

Try to be patient when playing poker.

One thing when teaching yourself how to play poker you also need to teach yourself how to be patient. Succeeding in poker is about waiting for a good hand to come along and to play it well. It isn't about playing any hand and taking a chance. Be prepared to sit at the table for quite a while when you begin. Use the time you have and watch and observe other players.

Do not play at tables with stakes that are higher than your ability!

Start in the free or very low stakes games and don't be tempted to up the level too soon. The natural hierarchy in poker means normally the high stakes games contain the best players! The quickest way to lose your cash is to go up a level and thinking you are the man now.

Play other people when they are drunk!

As I said before, when you are drunk you tend to bluff your way through games. Therefore if your playing partners are drunk then you have a better chance of winning without doing a thing.
